Kite Spots in Brazil
Most Kiters know of one place above all others to kite when coming to Brazil...the state of Ceara.
Ceara is in the North East of Brazil and is famous for kitesurfing and kiteboarding since it has the longest wind season anywhere in the World. With more than 9 months of wind and war temperatures all year round, Ceara is a Kitesurf ers dream and a Mecca and is th e reason why you need to come here.
Ceara is located on the North Eastern side, along the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city and international airport is Fortaleza. From here Kiters can explore both up and down the coast line checking out the various spots. The city itself has few attractions and with 2.5 million people can become quite congested and hot. As a kiter you will be happier sticking to the coastline. Below you will several maps to help you familiarize your self with the names and areas to kite.
Note: The wind builds as you move up the coast. Almost 100% of the time if you have 16 knots in Canoa Quebrada, you will have 17-20 knots in and near Fortaleza/Cumbuco, 18 - 22 knots in Paracuru, 22-25 in Ilha do Guajiru, 25-28 in Jericoacoara, and 28-32 in Maramar/Macapa. Bring Small Kites for the North East, it's windy here!

Canoa Quebrada
Located Upwind from Fortaleza it is approximately 150km away. Known for Paragliding as well as its quaint small Broadway bar and restaurant district, many travellers come here to vacation, kiter and none kiter alike. The town is above the cliffs over-looking out onto the Atlantic. The beaches are flat and wide with winds typically being 12-18knots throughout the season.
Many professional kiteboarders come here to Kite since the lower winds allow them to safely practice their new cool tricks.

Cumbuco
Likely one of the most famous Kite spots in Brazil, it is mistakenly not the windiest. It is only 45 minutes downwind from Fortaleza lending to it being a great place to party as many many Brasilians come here on holidays and weekends due to its proximity to the big city with 2.5 million people.
There are many restaurants and Pousadas and guest houses catering to the needs of Kiters. Only a few are along the ocean beach but not to worry as almost all are only 15-20 min. walk to get there.
The kiting is mostly ocean swell riding. There is a shore break but there are no reefs nearby if you are in front of the main kiting area. The wind is typically side and side-on shore between 12-18 knots depending on the day. There are many buggies here that you can hire to take you upwind or downwind to explore some of the nearby freshwater lagoons. If lucky you can even see some Pro's practicing...be careful though as these lagoons are not always good for beginners since they can get a little scary when its busy with many kiters. (Note, dont drink the lagoon water...bring anti-biotics if you do!).

Paracuru
Located about 1.5 hours downwind from Fortaleza Paracuru is well known for its Surf Break and Quebra Mar.
This break is created from a shallow outside reef that at low tide allow for a wind and ground swell wave to build. Its a lot of fun and theres lots of people there to share the experience with. Note, the area is not large, try to avoid it on weekends as it will be busier with locals as well. There are several pousadas to stay at in town, but none at the kite spot. You will need to take a buggy there and back eachday, cost is around 30R each way.

Ilha do Guajiru - Itarema
Largest lagoon for kiteboarding in Ceara and possibly all Brazil. No alligators, no piranhas, no sharks...just wind!
This place is one of the best places we have ever kited. Consistent side on shore wind, lots of space, not crowded.
As seen in the photos below the kiting takes place in an inland lagoon that is connected to the ocean. The outside sandbar blocks out the waves, approximate size is 1km x 5km long, lots of space... Kitesurf paradise.

jericoacoara
A small fishing village turned famous windsurf spot attracts thousands of tourists each year. It has a romantic feel with streets of sand and sand dunes surrounding it. It has a great night life and more restaurants and pousadas that one could want.
As it is secluded from the main roads with nearest town of Jijoca, the only way into it is by 4x4 or dune buggy, as all the roads are sand.
Kiting is possible upwind or downwind of the city itself since it is on the leeward side of a wind shadow. This makes the kiting in Jeri off shore and very gusty, not safe conditions for new kiters. However if you take a shuttle downwind to the river you can find calmer sideshore winds and open beaches. It is not possible to kite back so be sure you have your return transportation arranged in advance.

Maramar - Macapa
Maramar is a newly discovered spot just 5 km downwind from the more well known Barra Grande. Maramar has great lagoons and is almost half the price than staying in the nearby alternatives. Its a great place to relax and kite. Highly recommended.
